How It Works

Enter your distance and time to calculate pace, or enter your pace and distance to calculate finish time. The calculator instantly converts between min/km and min/mile.

Tips for Better Results

  • Use negative splits (faster second half) for better race times
  • Train at various paces to build fitness across all energy systems
  • Your easy pace should allow conversation without gasping

Converting Between Min/Mile and Min/KM

A mile is 1.60934 km, so to convert a km pace to a mile pace, multiply by 1.60934. To go the other way, divide your min/mile pace by 1.60934. For example, a 5:00/km pace becomes 5:00 x 1.60934 = 8:03/mile. Most GPS watches let you switch the display unit, but the underlying pace is identical, just expressed differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pace Calculator

Divide your total time by the distance covered. For example, if you ran 5 km in 25 minutes, your pace is 5 min/km. Our calculator handles the math and conversions automatically.

For beginners, a comfortable pace is typically 6:00-8:00 min/km (9:40-12:50 min/mile). Focus on being able to hold a conversation while running rather than hitting specific numbers.

Multiply your min/km pace by 1.609 to get min/mile, or divide your min/mile pace by 1.609 to get min/km. Our calculator does this conversion instantly.

You need to average 5:41/km (9:09/mile) or faster. That works out to roughly 8:53 per 5K split. Building in a small buffer, aim to train at 5:30-5:35/km pace so race day fatigue does not push you over 4 hours.

GPS watches average pace over a rolling window and lose accuracy under tree cover, in tunnels, or on tight turns. Your calculated pace from a known distance and time (e.g. a track or a road race with marked mile markers) is more reliable than instantaneous GPS pace.
